Where to buy rabbit meat in Kenya
Rabbit is one of the leanest meats sold in Kenya and one of the hardest to find on a shelf. Here is who actually sells it, what it costs, and how to cook it once it is in your kitchen.
The three ways to buy rabbit meat in Kenya
Rabbit almost never turns up in a supermarket chiller, so nearly everyone buying it in Kenya goes one of three routes.
- Direct from a rabbit farm. The cheapest way to buy, usually by the live animal. You take on the slaughtering, skinning and portioning, and you buy whatever size the farm has that week.
- Through a breeders' association. Groups of rabbit keepers who pool supply and can point you at a member near you. Useful if you want volume or a regular arrangement rather than a one-off.
- From a processor. Finished packs, already portioned and ready to cook. It costs more than a live rabbit because that work is done for you, and it is the only one of the three that gets delivered to your door.
Buying from Rabbit Space Africa
We are the third kind. Everything we sell is rabbit we process ourselves into sausages, burger patties and meatballs, so what arrives is ready for the pan.
- Collect in Nairobi. Bebabeba Trade Centre, Shop A08, Mon to Sat, 9am to 6pm. Closed Sunday.
- Delivered countrywide. Anywhere in Kenya, arranged when you order.
- Ordered on WhatsApp. So you can ask what is in stock before you pay.

How our rabbit meat is processed
We started out selling rabbit meat in 2023 and now process it ourselves rather than buying in finished product and relabelling it. The sausages, patties and meatballs are made from rabbit we have handled from the start.
There are no fillers, no preservatives and no colouring in any pack we sell. It is the reason our sausages are paler than the bright pink ones you are used to seeing, and the reason they have a shorter fridge life. More about how we started.
How to cook rabbit sausages, patties and meatballs
Rabbit is lean, which is the whole appeal and also the one thing that catches people out. There is little fat to keep it moist, so it punishes a long cook far more than beef or pork does.
- Sausages. Medium heat, turning often, until browned through. A little oil in the pan makes up for what the meat does not have.
- Burger patties. Hot pan, a few minutes a side. Press them once and leave them alone.
- Meatballs. Brown them first, then finish them in sauce so they stay moist.
Keep everything frozen until the day you need it, and thaw in the fridge rather than on the counter.
Is rabbit meat healthy?
Rabbit is a white meat and is widely regarded as one of the leaner meats, which is why it comes up so often in conversations about cutting back on red meat. It is usually eaten for the same reasons as skinless chicken: protein without much fat carried along with it.
We would rather point you at what we can actually stand behind than quote numbers at you. What we can tell you is what is in the pack, which is rabbit and seasoning, and nothing else. If you are eating to a specific medical requirement, talk to a doctor or a nutritionist rather than a butcher.
